I, personally, have no idea if this is addiction-driven or a straightforward mental breakdown, or just a way to stay in the papers when you’ve not released or worked on an album in over two years. But I have no problem whatsoever making fun of her; there’s no evidence at all that Britney has a self-esteem problem, nor any problem being photographed and reported doing mortifying things. The “Britney threw up in my trash can” story is one of the most common in Hollywood.

Hang on, let me find my “remotely interested in what a personality-deficient multi-millionaire does” face.

Prediction: Assuming she fails to overdose herself, she’ll turn up again about two months from now claiming to have been cured, and to have found Jesus/Scientology/Kabbalah. She will go on to say that “the pressure” of being who she is “drove her” into a pattern of substance abuse.

To which one could say “Un-huh. And to what do you attribute the stupidity?”

She is a human being, and needs help. No denying it. But she is thoroughly the creature of her own making. Any pressure she feels is the result of her own frantic scrabbling for the spotlight. For contrast, compare her first album cover (the Mouseketeer look) with the famed departing-limo-sans-undergarments pictures (another mammal entirely). If she’s been driven into anything, it’s her hand on the wheel.

I sympathize with addicition. But let’s not forget that she went out of her way to get there. Oh–and that her kids are humans too.

Good luck to her and can we now resume regular programming?
