A team of American-led divers has discovered a new crustacean in the South Pacific that resembles a lobster and is covered with what looks like silky, blond fur, French researchers said Tuesday. Scientists said the animal, which they named Kiwa hirsuta, was so distinct from other species that they created a new family and genus for it. The divers found the animal in waters 7,540 feet deep at a site 900 miles south of Easter Island last year.

I confess to being some hours late on this aquatic oddity. The plain fact is, I figured (not in the absence of feedback, I assure you) that people were about calamari’d out. And besides, this is obviously crustacean, not cephalopod, and therefore not quite on my beat. But those goddam Defamerites posted it. Dayum, and here I was HOLDING OFF suggesting squid chasers to the people at BoingBoing. Restraint and discretion have never been my watchwords, but from now on I see no point in not whoring it out when the impulse strikes me. That could have been MY Link, dammit.
