pic o’ the day: Giant Pacific Octopus

One of the commenters over on Pharyngula suggests this imade from Speigel is actually a shot of an octopus bringing home groceries, but I prefer the other commenter’s suggestion that the diver is giving some heavy cephalo-oral. Click to enlarge, if you dare! Taken off the Queen Charlottes in BC.

  1. Now you know why we have to grow such large trees. It takes a lot of wood to support something that big! Also, we encourage hiking in the forest; got to feed these buggers, and it takes a lot of ecotourists to sustain a sixteen-footer!

  2. Dear R-C

??? Have there been any measurements of how many tourists are required to feed a fully grewn octopus male

    ? 1 American or 6 Spanish models

    Your obedient servant etc

  3. That’s about right, but because we are socialists the Octopi share the tourists around with the other octopi. One gets a flank, one gets a drumstick, one gets Kate Moss, etc.

  4. Just looking at that all I can think is my bathing suit might as well have “hors de ouvres” spray painted on my butt.

  5. Deep sea creatures freak me out, completely. That’s why I’ve got so many of the critters on my blog. I always wanna keep an eye on the bastards.
