  1. “You Are a Smart American

You know a lot about US history, and you’re opinions are probably well informed.
Congratulations on bucking stereotypes. Now go show some foreigners how smart Americans can be.”

That quiz was nothing. I’m almost ashamed to say I aced it. Its creator ought to be bitch-slapped.

  2. Apparently I’m a smart American.

But, in the words of Lisa Simpson, “As intelligence goes up, happiness goes down. See, I made a graph. I make a lot of graphs.”

I’m having one of those days when I wish I was a dumb American…. :/

  3. Well, I am not a dumb American (8/10). But nor do I know it all either. That’s probably a good thing. I hate being a know it all ;-). I would be interested to see how I do on the equivalent Canadian test………hmmm

  4. Canadians traditionally do rather poorly at Canadian history tests, because for some reason what we get until we enter college or university (or as in my case, don’t) is “North American” history. This rightly acknowledges the role the United States has played in shaping the continent, but ignores the role Canada played in shaping the US, for starters.

Other things it ignores include slavery and racism in Canada, prohibition, and several other things Canadians sometimes sneer at the US for clinging to because we sometimes think we sprang full-blown from the forehead of God, free from historical sin.

I have known a number of US citizens who can name all the presidents. Canada didn’t get a Prime Minister until nearly a hundred years later and our elections are a year farther apart, meaning we’ve had fewer of ’em. And because the first/third PMs and the tenth/twelfth/ thirteenth were the same guys (MacDonald and King respectively) we have even fewer.

In all we have had just over half the number of PMs as the US has had presidents. Try asking any Canadian to name them all.

    8/10

  5. No argument there although I must say that in my Social Studies classes we spent years on pre-Canadian history. We focussed a great deal on the explorers and early settlers. Mind you, that was a long time ago (Grad ’77) and outside of Cartier, Vancouver and Simon Fraser none of those other names come to mind.

Looking through the list of Canadian P.M.s there are quite a number of names that I don’t recognize (especially those from the late 1800s) but luckily there are quite a few (more than half) of the 22 that I recognize and could name. I have been alive for 9 of them. How’s that for dating myself?

  6. Bonjour M Metro

The Britisch have had so many useless, totally forgettable Prime Ministers – especially in the 1920s and from 1760 to 1783 (the American Revolution which secured freedom for (1) the Middle-American part of the Britisch Family and indeed (2) the rest of the Britisch Family)

…. and from 1990 – now what is the name of the current PM and his wife who are so popular on your side of the Pond ….. why do I keep thinking about Dalmatioan-puppy-fur coats …… and vast Civil-Rights’ Barristers bills, paid by the taxpayer ….

…. and you North-Amerikans think you are hard-done-by when you only have Mlle Coulter to grace your political scene

    Our long-suffering Children should be focusing on the letters for Members of the Atomic Table – N, A, F, T, A, Ch, K, E, T , C ….

and please, please do not use bad language by reminding me of that Scottisch wRetch who replaced the great Pitt the Elder in 1760 – my keyboard reFuses to type his name, BBbbbBBB@*£$%^

    Done!

If you want Mmlle Coulter, you can have her. I’ll take Tony Blair and Cheri. Hell, I’ll take Tony Soprano and Cheri. Unfortunately that won’t be enough.

The disease of which she and her incestuous ideological brethren are symptoms calls for swift amputation of the infected part, and even then there are strong questions about whether the patient will recover.

The patient’s Constitution, after all, is not as strong as it once was.
