Stone Age computing: Maria lays it down old skool for Cookie Monster

By now, poor old Cookie‘s probably become one of those sad shut-ins who does nothing but rack up the Visa charges ordering from Cookies4uonline.com.

Thanks a lot, bitch.

  1. my friend: i have a question for you.

if i were to change my wordpress url to my name i.e. alieteraz.com

would i lose my page rank and incoming technorati links? the page rank is the most important thing.

    please advise.

also, do you know that if it would be possible to make my site look like a professional website? or does it have to look like a blog?

  2. Yes and yes. And there is nothing whatsoever you can do about it, believe me. I tried. It is heartbreaking but neither Technorati nor Google cares. It took me months to get back to where I was.

As for a professional website look, it’s not difficult although it’s not a skill set I have; you need to investigate the Custom CSS option. Don’t pay for it until you sorta know what you’re doing, but then you can get it and change the look pretty easily; check the forums for the CSS info, and ask sunburntkamel and engtech for some tips, they’re the gurus.

  3. i have already paid for the css thing a while ago thats how my site looks the way it does

if im going to have to start from scratch, why would i just go into wordpress.org instead of sticking here? to enjoy the benefits of being in the wordpress.com community?

  4. Well, you’ve got to make the call. If I had your status I’d probably stick with this blog here, because the loss would be too substantial and I’m not sure a personal blog could get back to that status; most of your readers will be looking for stuff at eteraz.org, not a personal blog. An issue site has much more draw. Your blog got as big as it did because it was at least in part an issue blog. With that bled off to eteraz.org, I don’t see the personal blog achieving that rank again easily or quickly. And some of the top blogs in the world don’t have tight, clean URLs. Pharyngula is in the top 300, and his URL is an ugly mofo that nobody can ever remember.

If you’ve paid for the CSS thing and feel comfortable tinkering, go ahead and play. There are many CSS addicts in the forum, and plenty of ideas floating around. One word of caution: do NOT change your first page to a static page, or Technorati will dump you back at the beginning of the queue. engtech suffered that recently.

Also, with a WordPress.org blog, you’re responsible for all the techie aspects and the security. Up to you whether or not you want to take that on.
