or at least Vancouver poet/accordionist/comedian Rowan Lipkovits is. Here he is at the Roxy, a barn-like nightclub for people under 25 looking to get A) shitfaced and B) laid. Watch and enjoy as he testifies to the fact that he is not exactly in their target demographic. The songs are Al Mader‘s I’m a Lousy Lover and Lipkovits‘ own elderly-tomcat theme, Cougar Man. UPDATE: Rowan reports that Cougar Man is a product of the genius of Peter Guindon, aka Bob Uker (as in ukulele-player), aka The Minoans.

That was my first time at the Roxy, courtesy of Richard Lett and the fellas at the Keep Your Head Up comedy night there… somewhere near the top of my list of “places I never thought I’d be playing my accordion”, along with “a sold-out Cambie Pub on New Year’s Eve” and “opening for the Rheostatics at Richard’s on Richards.” (If things continue along these lines, I may have to eventually get around to learning how to play with BOTH hands while singing!)
To give credit where it’s due, “Cougar Man” was originally composed by one Peter Guindon, aka Bob Uker (as in ukulele-player), aka The Minoans at http://www.myspace.com/theminoans … if you like CM, you’ll love “Sandwich Artist”. (As for Mr. Mader, you haven’t lived until you’ve heard his “Dead Man’s Pants”.)
While I wouldn’t want to overdo things and risk co-opting Britney Week with Lipkovits Week, if this nonsense is your speed you might get a kick out of my Creaking Planks cover of NIN’s “closer” over at http://www.myspace.com/creakingplanks
Actually, I could totally see you at the Cambie. I’ll edit the post to give credit where credit is due. Al Mader is da bomb, on this we can agree.
YOU DO NIN???? OMGWTFLOL!!! I must see this.
Rowan: Please give me the URL of that MP3. I am DYING to post your version of NIN’s Closer. I really don’t think there’s anything like that out there in the cover version world…
Ack bap… it’s flagged “downloadable” now, but we haven’t any hosting space and I don’t think one can link directly to Myspace. I’ll see if there’s anywhere we can toss it up – or drop a line if you have any recomendations 8)
Thanks, I appreciate it. I use http://studio.odeo.com myself for hosting. I’ll see if I can grab it from where it is, but I didnt’ have any luck yesterday.
You wouldn’t have — it was flagged undownloadable until about 10:42 this morning 8)
Ah thanks, I shall now go try again. You should friend Trent and see what he says…I think he’s got a band page on there…
