Tonight my computer actually made me cry.
Does anyone have a secondhand laptop with decent speed? I’m definitely buying.
I hope I may be forgiven a rant under the circumstances. If that’s not what you want to read, click here for the raincoaster randomizer and have fun.
Moving on…
I’ve been sick since the end of August, nearly got sent to the hospital for it, am trying eight different ways to get the mold situation in my apartment dealt with, got a super new currently-undiagnosed thing that could be nothing or could be a big deal, we will have to wait and see, started two new jobs this month neither of which I have been able to do well enough at in my opinion, my grandmother is in the hospital and barely hanging on, I have worked about 60 hours in the last four days, quite a lot of it on my feet, and the computer is so slow that in order to move the cursor you click where you want it to go and walk away, wash a couple of mugs and start the tea brewing, come back and watch it appear.
Tomorrow I am trucking out to Surrey (two hours on transit each way) to cover for a friend who has to leave a conference early. Then, after about an hour and a half, I am trucking all the way back to downtown to meet with some blogging clients and teach them all about WordPress (if I can talk past all the coughing). Then I am coming home and posting on TeenyManolo and Ayyy and, if tomorrow is anything like today, that will take me till about three in the morning. Then I will think about posting to raincoaster, realize I haven’t done the affiliate links for the Manolosphere, sigh and think about crying again, and then go do the damn links.
And the day after that I’m in for about twelve hours of work outdoors and three miles of walking, minimum, and hopefully it won’t rain because I’m supposed to be liveblogging. IF they have a computer for me, which they probably won’t. I don’t get the impression it’s considered a priority. Mind you, if they don’t have one the one I have certainly won’t be able to handle liveblogging, so I can just turn around and come home. And get a reputation as someone who doesn’t do her work.
Swell.
Got to go, got six affiliate links to do…
UPDATE: and the post for Ayyyy. The Teenymanolo one took me five hours or so, thanks to this computer and the fact that the version of WordPress we’ve got doesn’t seem to work properly. If I collapse at the conference I hope they take me to the hospital in New West, not the one in Surrey.
UPDATE 2.5 hours later: Ayyyy post done. On to affiliate linking. There is now no possibility of my getting eight hours of sleep.
Sorry to here your having such a rough time
with your computer helpfully some can help
you out.
I thought some computers were supposed to be coming your way about this time last month. What happened? You need a decent computer. You need some rest. You need a hug. Damn, I wish I could help, but I got nothing. So virtual hugs, and I’ll see what magic I can do.
Thanks. I know a lot of people. Surely SOMEONE must be willing to sell me a computer that will open more than four windows at a time.
Thankfully, it turned out that all the so-called affiliate links today were to sites that are not actually affiliates, so all I had to do was check two sites and four lists and go “yay, I’m done!”. What a relief!
@silverstar, I DID get a new laptop. But it’s actually older than my desktop model and crashes every time I have four Firefox windows open. It would be perfectly fine for word processing offline, but I do hardly any of that.
The desktop machines I haven’t gotten my act together to pick up. Two have manifested, one bailed.
And thanks. I’m just trying to wind down now so I can go to bed and sleep.
Oh and today I bought some luscious tea rose perfume, came home and dosed myself heavily with it. Forgetting that there are very, very few things in this world to which I am allergic, but tea rose perfume is one of them. I have a raging headache now. I shall seek solace in the medicine cabinet.
Shouldn’t that be the liquor cabinet? Or was that a euphemism?
How about a manufacturer’s rebuild? Those at least come with some sort of warranty and they’re not as expensive as new.
(Sorry to hear about the allergy-same here with lily of the valley, which next to orange water, is my favoritest scent.)
I wish you’d posted this last week – a new shop was opening and I could have got £200 off a Macbook. I have always wanted a Mac. I know I’ve only had this laptop for a year and it’s been great and does what it says on the tin but I would have sold it; I dreeeeam of a Mac. Always have.
My dreams are in fact quite sad. I dreamt I was pregnant last night!
There’s no way I could afford a Macbook. John Chow offered me his used one and it’s still $1700! My budget is around five hundred.
Jennifer, I’ve looked into rebuilds and refurnished computers in the past and will look again. The price range makes things much simpler.
And yes, I want a Mac desperately. But that’s probably not going to happen. And after all the nice things I’ve said about Steve Jobs!
Steve Jobs is still an evil/genius. I wish I could just go up there and go fetch your desktops for you. If only we didn’t live in the Reign of Terror of George the Second.
A friend who’s a sysadmin says you might have a worm/trojan problem in the laptop that is slowing it down. Have you done a good tune-up on it? Yeah, right, like you have time for that.
I’ve done full virus/worm scans on the thing. Nada. Hard drive wipe and everything reinstalled by a geek before I got my hands on it. It’s a Pentium II; how could it possibly meet contemporary performance standards? But I can’t work with only four windows open, so I need a new computer. It’s non-negotiable.
In fact, I need one by Saturday, or a loaner for the day. Don’t think Fearless is going to free up one of theirs and I’m NOT going to liveblog via my phone. Not with the rates I pay!

I’m guessing it’s purely a personality conflict. Have you tried relationship counselling?
You could take it to your shrink–if he’s been released.
Well, he’s actually easier to find when he stays put in Kingston.
