Steve Irwin death video will not be broadcast

That about sums it up.

In an interview with Baba Wawa on 20/20, Terri Irwin has said that she will not release the video footage of her husband’s death by stingray. This article comes from the BBC, via Trenchcoat Chronicles.

“What purpose would that serve?” she asked presenter Barbara Walters in an interview with US programme 20/20

His wife … insisted his death was just a “stupid” accident – “like running with a pencil”…

The 42-year-old mother of two said her late husband knew he would not live a long life.

“He’d talk about it often,” she said. “But it wasn’t because of any danger from wildlife. He just felt life could be dangerous.”

As I said before, the wishes of the dead are to be respected, but not neccessarily obeyed. The film belongs to Terri Irwin and the film company, and it is their right to decide what happens to it.

Here is the tribute speech to Irwin by his daughter, Bindi Sue, who has her own television show. He was actually getting footage of the stingray for her when he died. She’s already stated that she has no intention of giving up on the show, but considers it carrying on the family legacy. Those are big boots to fill, kid, but judging from this it looks like you’re off to a good start.

I’m sure that they do, particularly as they are all carrying on his work. And my god, doesn’t the little girl look just like her dad?

I certainly hope they are not going to release that episode. I love Steve and I couldn’t believe the news when I heard it off the radio. Kept wishing it wasn’t true. Especially sad because it had happened when Steve was helping Bindi start her won series.

I’m glad Bindi is considering taking over from where her dad left behind. But I hope it was a decision she had made for herself, and what she really wanted to do, not what the world expects her to do.

Bindi committed to the series last year, and from what I’ve seen and heard she’s a natural on-camera. Still, she’s very young and there’s time for her to find a different path if she chooses. I’ve no doubt Terri Irwin is more than capable of keeping Australia Zoo going with her staff, allowing her children to find their own ways. She’s from Cascadia, and we tend to be rather hippie here. I hope and believe she’s not a controlling stage mom.

Bindi, you must be proud on your dad. He is an amazing guy who did brilliant job for animal life. I’m a big fan of him.

As a diver and one who compares stingrays to sea puppies, I still want to see the film. All dogs have the ability to smell and Steve’s aroma could not have been threatening. Rays, like dogs can smell divers half a mile away. The same way dogs come wagging their tails when friends arrive, the same way stingrays behave.

Apparently he just startled it, coming over a rise. Exactly the same thing happened to a diver in the Bandas the year I was there, so I was surprised to hear that it’s a rare occurance.

I thought it was manta rays that were peaceful?

Very good that they wont release the video footage of his dead, it wouldn’t be appropriate to broadcast someones death just for sensationalism.

  11. Posted October 18, 2006 at 8:13 am | Permalink

That was never the goal. The goal Steve had for the video was, as always, to stay true to the actual events. He wanted what he did to show people that they had to respect nature, or there would be consequences. Fortunately, most people watched what he did and thought, “crikey, that man’s insane to do that! It’s bloody dangerous!”

She has all the money she needs; I don’t think she wants to get rich helping death junkies get their jollies.

you know i kind of wanted to see the video. but it is his wifes right not to show it. could you imagine losing a spouse or family member dying like that and then everyone in the world hasleing you to see it, what ever happened to respect for the dead and their family. the bad part is people only want to see it because he was famous. i feel so bad for terie and her children. she just lost the love of her life and sickoes are out there making fun of him with ignorant comments or pittifull videos. and the tabloids are really getting their jollies. people you cant hurt him anymore but you can hurt his family, think before you do. steve irwin was an awsome man who cared for everything in life and helped so many animals, i think he deserves our respect. RIP STEVE. AND GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS TERIE, BINDI,AND BOB.

I appreciate your comment, but I must disagree about one thing. There are millions of people who do want to see the video only because he was famous, but more than his fame, for some of us it was the sheer intensity and authenticity of what he did that made him mesmerizing. I want to see the video because I want to see the authentic story of what happened to that astonishing man, not because I love fame or because I’m a death junkie, of which there are unfortunately millions.

i don’t know why anyone would ever want to watch this travesty. I cry and cry but I just can’t get that image out of my head. The only time this would ever be cool is if the stingray was getting killed. They should hunt down the stingray and put his death on TV. That would be the only thing to make me feel better. That stupid sting ray haunts me in my dreams :( Rest in peace Stingray :{.

I consider it is too soon to show the video. Maybe when time passes by, they should pass portions of the video for educational purposes, because people think rays are not dangerous and more accidents are happening with them. Steve came to this world to love and take care of wildlife, but most of all I think his mission was to educate the world about the animals and how to learn to love and respect wild life.
So maybe its just a matter of time. Just to let heal the grief.

Thanks Daniel. That’s a good blog you’ve got.

Cat, Dil, and mrdrer, welcome. Cat, you make a good point. Stingray injuries and deaths are becoming more common, and I think in part it’s that people have swallowed whole the info that they are not dangerous. Quite obviously, they are and should not be taken for granted. They are not MANTA rays.

Unfortunately, it looks like Bindi’s series is on hold. The family’s manager is on a year-long hiatus as he thinks over the events of Steve’s death and what it means in the context of entertainment, education, and the continuation of Australia Zoo. The family is going to be patient; I’m sure they could use the time as well.

bottm line, steve IS and WAS the MAN., end of story. watch the shows….if he wanted anything at all its for you trash polluting, overfishing, coral reef destroying, deforesting people to stop. we only have so much. and we ALL share this Earth. his legacy is his work, not some death video. thats sick, if its terris wishes, respect them, i doubt young little Bindi would LOVE seeing her daddy killed, oh yeah and young bobby too. leave them alone, start loving the earth your on. Steve was at heart a conservationist. to carry his legacy, dont throw your Mcdonalds cup on the ground, dont throw your cigarette butts out your window, dont polute….and youve done your share. there is only one Earth, let us enjoy what steve tried so hard to protect.
