Terry Gilliam: for the love of god watch my new movie!

GilliamWell, not in so many words.

But Gawker caught him accosting strangers on the sidewalk, imploring them to go see Tideland, his new movie.

Poor man; the only way he can get Brad to return his calls now is to pretend to be yet another of Angie‘s exotic adoptees.

On the brink of financial destruction as ever, Gilliam pleaded with the mob to go see his movie when it opens on Friday, or else it will get kicked out of theaters in a week (or less).

Give the dude credit for not giving up despite years of disappointment; plus, he’s still rocking that ratty vestigial ponytail thing.

  1. Wonder if it would help to e-mail him and rell him how much I enjoyed “Baron Muchausen,” “12 Monkeys” and “Brazil,” and that I really meant to go see “The Fisher King” but got held up by work?

  2. Now I think I am fairly savvy when it comes to art films, from the beginning of film itself, but somehow, I never, never find myself saying, “I would like to see a Terry Gilliam film”.

Firstly I am not sure what a Terry Gilliam film is and secondly they have always left me baffled and slightly grumpy.

I don’t think someone will turn around in fifty or one hundred years time and call him a genius. He will be forgotten or perhaps only remembered as an eccentric who made Ed Wood quality films on a Stanley Kubrick budget.

  3. FE: too bad. The Fisher King is the best, next to Brazil.

I like Gilliam films, except Time Bandits. I would still love to see that documentary on his doomed Don Quixote film. I think history will remember him fondly.

  4. Now I liked Time Bandits–which shows you the errors in judgement Raincoaster is capable of under the influence of cheap gin. And Fisher King did indeed, well, not exactly rock, but it was definitely a Tony Clifton-calibre lounge act.

  5. Doesnt matter what you think of the films. I for one am very happy that Terry Gilliam is giving the world a breath of relative fresh air, “Will Direct For Food” is just too good!

  6. I could tell you, but the information would destroy you.

Metro, as you are well aware, I do not drink cheap gin. I drink Bombay Sapphire or, in desperate circumstances, Tanqueray. You, of course, do not drink anything that doesn’t come in a can, so what do you know?

  7. FE, definitely, watch the Fisher King. I re-watch it occasionally because it is so damned good…thought-provoking without being weird (like the Baron), moving without being tragic (like Brazil), amusing without being silly (like Time Bandits, or any Python animation).
