Wow, I know. Hurricane Ike, and others, are awful.
Seriously, what is that man (and the photographer) doing in Galveston? He must be a eedjut.
O_O!!!!
The warning from the weather service reads:
“Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single family one or two story homes will face certain death. Many residences of average construction directly on the coast will be destroyed. Widespread and devastating personal property damage is likely elsewhere.”
That is an amazing photograph.
I’m still waiting for word on the freighter. 50 foot seas, no power or steerage. Woof. Gotta be scary.
Did you ever read The Perfect Storm? You’ll never forget it if you do: packed with weather nerd facts. Terrifying weather nerd facts. Like, a rogue wave blew out the pilothouse windows of the Queen Mary…
92 feet above the water line.
Rain–
“The Perfect Storm” was one of the best books I ever read. Linda Greenlaw, skipper of the Andrea Doria’s(?) sister ship wrote an interesting book about the event, too. (The directors of the sucky film wouldn’t let her play herself in the movie.)
That book reminded me of “The Lost Moon” by James Lovell. Scary but true adventures.
I’ll look for that one too. I buy everything Sebastian Junger writes; have you seen his book Fire? Half about smokejumpers and half about Afghanistan before 9/11. Fascinating stuff.
wow an amazing pic keep up the gd work lol
“The Lone Survivor” by Marcus Luttrell is another white-knuckle read. Navy Seal training for the 1st 2/5ths of the book, with scary Afganistan operations for the rest. VERY recommended reading for anyone who doubts why we are fighting Al Qaida there.
I’m off on a long weekend as of tomorrow, so I’ll try to swing by a bookstore and pick up at least one of these. And perhaps the newest from Mike Davis, too, although that would require remembering the title, probably. Something SlumSomething or SlumSomething Something. One of those.
