war profiteering: not just for Haliburton anymore!

War Profiteering sinks the ship of stateIn fairness, not just for Haliburton and Osama bin Laden, who was discovered to have shorted airline stocks just before 9/11, making himself an estimated $3,000,000.

JERUSALEM, Aug 15 (Reuters) – Israel’s armed forces chief came under political fire on Tuesday after a newspaper reported he sold off a stock portfolio just hours after Hizbollah abducted two Israeli soldiers in a raid that triggered a month-long war.

Lieutenant-General Dan Halutz, acknowledging the sale in comments to reporters, denied any impropriety.

The Maariv daily said Halutz went to his bank branch and sold shares worth 120,000 shekels But really...how much?($27,460) three hours after the soldiers were seized by the Lebanese guerrilla group on July 12.

Key share indexes in Israel fell around 12 percent at the outset of fighting between Israeli forces and Hizbollah after the abduction. Share prices gradually recovered and now stand slightly below pre-war levels.

“It was my portfolio of shares, on which I had lost 25,000 shekels,” Maariv quoted Halutz as saying.

“It is true that I sold the portfolio on July 12 but it is impossible to link that to the war. At the time, I did not expect or think there would be a war,” he said, according to Maariv.

A day after the abduction, Israeli aircraft carried out a major attack in Lebanon, bombing runways at Beirut airport.

Well again, in fairness how was he to know that Israel would attack Lebanon? He was only the commander in charge of the armed forces and you can ask any enlisted man how clueless the officers are.

  1. I see the president of Iran has started a blog. Is raincoaster going to contribute? Or does raincoaster think it’s time for some Steven_L style international diplomacy with the Axis of Evil?

  2. The Axis of Evil. Jesus fucking christ, Steven, Iran’s not even in it. Weren’t they supposed to bomb North Korea next? Or was it Pakistan? These axes keep shifting.

  3. the original axis of evil was Iraq/Iran/North Korea. then there are the ‘outposts of tyranny’ these are Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Belarus, Zimbabwe and Myanmar.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_of_evil

Japan want to buy the F22 now that North Korea are firing rockets towards them.

When September 11th happened I was working in an ICT company where 2 of our technicians were ex-military and one of the directors have worked many years in the gulf. They all reckons it would be the beginning of world war 3, I’m starting tothink they were right.

Pakistan are safe at the moment, they are our commonwealth allies and allies in the war on terror.

  4. Yes, and the source of most of those arrested under the Terrorism Act. If India and Pakistan go to war, I don’t think the US will be coming down on the Pakistani side for some reason.

  5. I don’t care where they’re getting the arms from; all this means is that both side’s guns will jam and rust at equal rates.

And this isn’t about who would beat whom in a war between India and Pakistan. It’s about whether or not that’s the next international tinderbox. And I think it may well be. Pakistan can always call on the worldwide Muslim population and the Pakistani diaspora to pony up; their reach goes well beyond their borders. India doesn’t operate the same way. Any war between them will automatically become a worldwide issue, because of the Muslim jihad.

  6. So you think we need to make a pre-emptive strike against the Muslim Jihad for the sake of our Hindu friends in India? Where should we strike? Iran?

  7. If you’re so gosh-darn focused on blowing someone up, I suggest you join the army and do it yourself. Meanwhile, stop being such a cheerleader for destruction.

  8. Appeasement doesn’t work rainocaster, it’s that Iranian dude that wants to blow us all up with his nukes. He was testing his rockets last night.

  9. Not declaring war does not equal appeasement. Of course he was testing rockets; if Nato was breathing down your neck you would too!

You’ll have more street cred on this when you show yourself willing to serve, rather than to merely send other people to fight in your stead.

  10. Anyway, as an aetheist the i am ritually unclean according to the ayatollah, he lumps the likes of me and you in with the following:

‘urine, feces, sperm, carrion, blood, a dog, a pig, an unbeliever, wine, beer, and the sweat of a camel that eats unclean things’

Those guys are trouble, they hate us aetheists, I don’t want nutters like that to have to bomb, besides, it was the Muslims that invaded the holy land first. That’s what we fought the crusades for. When they cite this Israel Palestine crap it doesn’t wash with me, they even knocked down Jewish and Christian religious buildings and put Mosques on top hundreds of years ago. They started it and they don’t tolerate me.

I say regime change before he spreads his word too far!

  11. Some history for you

‘This background in the Christian West must be matched with that in the Muslim East. Muslim presence in the Holy Land goes back to the initial Arab conquest of Palestine in the 7th century. This did not interfere much with pilgrimage to Christian holy sites or the security of monasteries and Christian communities in the Holy Land of Christendom, and western Europeans were not much concerned with the loss of far-away Jerusalem when, in the ensuing decades and centuries, they were themselves faced with invasions by Muslims and other hostile non-Christians such as the Vikings and Magyars. However, the Muslim armies’ successes were putting strong pressure on the Eastern Orthodox Byzantine Empire.

A turning point in western attitudes towards the east came in the year 1009, when the Fatimid caliph of Cairo, al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, had the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem destroyed.’

You se they started it, palestine is no excuse, they invaded it before we built Israel. Anglo Saxons like me can get on with the French and the Scandinavians, these fundamentalist sh’ia muslims are nutters.

  12. And as for Pakistan they are conveniently distracted by the cricket umpiring controversy – that should keep them sidetracked for a few weeks
