Sometimes Goth is exactly the right thing, and for this week, this is exactly the right song.

I totally dig Evanescence.
Did you know they were up for several Christian music awards until somebody told the committee that Goth was Satanist, not Christian, and they were dropped? How can anyone listen to the song and NOT understand it’s anything but Satanist?
I’m looking at the lyrics now. They’re ambiguous at best, but there’s nothing I perceive as satanic about them. She could be imploring Jesus if you wanted to read it that way. Their lyrics in general are tortured, dark, and haunting but perhaps this committee was more concerned with that combined with their looks. Wouldn’t surprise me.
I don’t know if you listen to Concrete Blonde, but their lyrics are far more explicit in their references to vampires etc.
I’ve got Concrete Blonde, too. I did love them; too bad you don’t hear from them anymore. They were far darker, and explicitly wrote Lestat-themed songs.
Amy whatserface, the lead singer from Evanescence has been quoted as saying this is a song about Christian redemption, so for the awards committee to throw the group out of consideration for the way they dressed is an almost perfect example of bigotry and letting your assumptions run away with you.
While I do see this particular song as about redemption, I don’t read the lyrics as Christian redemption specifically. But that’s the beauty of these lyrics – you can read into them what you want. When I first started listening to the CD and this song in particular, I actually pictured her imploring an old boyfriend.
I really wonder how many people these days actually pay attention to lyrics. In general, I mean; not critics or experts – just plain Joe Blow buying the CD. I guess because I’m a writer I always listen to the lyrics. I don’t really give a crap about appearances, and you’re right, people see something, don’t LISTEN, and then let their assumptions run wild.
Emo kids do. They care, profusely and messily. Otherwise, not particularly. I think in part techno is responsible. I mean, Moby’s a genius, but he doesn’t really care about the lyrics; it’s all about the beautiful noise.
Everybody Knows was my favorite Concrete Blonde song
“Wendy”. I guess I”m just morbid.
