Henry VIII: first known casualty of Atkins diet

Hank 8...everything in sight, apparentlyFrom Fortean Times. I have friends who’ve been on the Atkins diet, megaprotein, zero carbs, avoid carrots and many other veggies, as they’re terribly starchy; each and every one of them swears it works. And each and every one of them is overweight. What do they teach them in school nowadays? (besides math)

June 28. Henry VIII, the king who destroyed the fabric of monastic England and most of its sacred shrines, was born today in 1491. It used to be thought that he died of syphilis, but it was malnutrition that did him in, according to historian Susan Maclean Kybett; specifically, he didn’t eat his greens. It seemed that scurvy, caused by vitamin C deficiency, is the only disease that fits his symptoms – ulcerated legs, bad breath, collapsed nose etc. There was a prejudice at the time that only lower orders ate vegetables; the rich could afford more exiting things like venison.

Fatkins

Thank god that particular fad is over. I’m a little tired of going to restaurants with people who smell like abatoirs and who insist on ordering three courses and then whining about how they can’t eat two of them.

On the bright side, I’ve much enjoyed the extra servings of dessert and even convinced one poor sap that Martinis are high in carbs…here, let me get rid of that so it doesn’t bother you. You can have the twist, though.

from Raj, who probably had no idea I’d load it on Youtube. But there ya go; live and learn (to cross me off your forward lists).

Canadian Rock: Bigger! Harder! Boozier!

quote of the day

"Talk, fantasies, sucking fucking and crying" at A Deserted and Peaceful on June 25th from whenever the hell to whenever the fuck? I am so there.

Yes, Gmail has many great features that I really must explore.

bartending 101 and bartending -101

The 5 steps to bartending. I think this song is Italian, but I am unsure. Yes, I know the text is English. Smartass.

And here's a really good example of what not to do when you're tending bar. You're not in Cirque du Soleil, dammit; I only asked for a Jack Manhattan!

love, exciting and new, and extremely inconvenient in a country where most singles still live with their parents

Such as Japan. My friend over at JapanProbe has launched a new blog, and indeed for this contribution to travelling "comfort" his place in heaven is assured.

It's a love hotel info blog.

Rabuho.com : A Love Hotel information Blog!

Ever wanted to find out where a good love hotel was, but lacked the ability to navigate Japanese language love hotel sites? I remember the days when my Japanese was still at a beginner level and I had to struggle to locate “after date” locations to take girls. It was truly difficult to find a good love hotel in those days.

Love

Well, those days are now over, and I’ve decided to launch rabuho.com, a blog devoted to providing the English-speaking population of Japan and tourists with love hotel info. At the moment there are only a few hotels listed on the site, mostly in the Kanto region. However, I plan to update it regularly, eventually creating an extremely useful resource for “socially active” gaijin. Please check it out!

Blogroll accordingly. Me, I've decided I'm never having sex again, so why would I bother?
