Ronrey Rife

According to Team America World Police's secret spycam footage, Kim Jong Il is a very ronrey boy. Heading a country of 22 million people, 21.999999 million of whom detest and fear one, must indeed greatly interfere with developing a well-rounded social life.

A commentor on Guido Fawkes' blog notes, however, that Kim's MySpace profile lists 1127 more friends than Dave Cameron's. Boris Johnson is doing rather better, with 533 friends, starting with Thatcher and including some surprising additions.

I note with a measure of patriotic pride that Pierre Trudeau has 1571 friends, beating them all into the dust, despite having been dead for several years. You never lose it, I guess.

"Reason over Passion" that's my motto — It carried me through 16 years as Prime Minister of Canada (from 1968 to 1979 and 1980 to 1984). My Prime Ministership saw Canada become a nation that upholds the values of multiculturalism and billingualism. I brought the constitution back to Canada (so we no longer had to go begging to Britain to amend it) and I brought the the Charter of Rights and Freedoms! What can I say, I was a great Prime Minister – too bad they didn't name the mountain after me but at least I have an airport! And what other Prime Minister chilled with Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono, dated Barbara Striesand, and was chased around by girls? I had Trudeaumania, slid down bannisters, pirouetted behind the Queen of England, and gave the finger to those who pissed me off! So if you like billingualism and multiculturalism and/or are a beautiful woman (especially a celebrity) say hello… but if you're Richard Nixon, Rene Levesque, an Alberta oil baron, or a Quebec seperatist then you'll just see "how far I'll go"

Memorial

On the occassion of the US holiday of Memorial Day, the essay of the day, by guestblogger Darryl, over at Jesus' General.

Iraqi Girl

I watched the documentary, Control Room, again last night. One of the scenes featured an Al Jazeera reporter, Hassan Ibrahim, discussing the run-up to the war with a number of Iraqi intellectuals. He told them that he did not believe that the American people would allow the war to happen. He said that we were a rational people and a people who revered justice above all else. I once thought that too. With all of our faults, I believed that we were a people who truly believed in reason, justice, and the principles of democracy, and maybe we did, but it is no longer true.We became vengeful and bloodthirsty, striking out against the innocent and the weak to ease our groundless fears. We are now Fox News. We are a nation of Malkins, Hewitts, and Charles Johnsons, frightened of everything that is different or alien to us and reacting violently.

My America is dead. Or perhaps more accurately, The America I believed in, and the people Ibrahim thought he knew, never existed. As saddened as I am at this realization, I now understand that I must fight even harder to ensure that we do not lose our way again.

Operation Global Media Domination: An Era Ends

TIAToday Clay Aiken and Michael Sandecki are outpulling Beautiful Agony as draws to this blog. And yesterday, both the Shebeen Club and the Irish Heather were for a time ahead of BA in the hit stakes.

And with that, an internet icon falls.

PS Don't worry, Sean, I am going to write up the real story as soon as I've had my little dinner break.

Indonesian Earthquake Relief

Here is the page for Save the Children Fund's Indonesian Earthquake relief effort. The death toll stands at 3500, but is low because of the understandable desire of the local people to perform the burials quickly. This will climb, particularly as rescue efforts are ongoing.

Donate to the Indonesian Earthquake Children's Emergency Fund

Your donations will help us meet basic needs including providing water, food, medicines, hygiene kits and temporary shelter, with a special focus on ensuring that children are protected and safe. We will begin assembling family kits with household supplies and other basic necessities to assist displaced families

The Irish Heather Painting and its REAL story; the second of several parts

Well, it's two parts so far until I hear from Fire-man. From what I hear of that lad, this could go as many installments as Nancy Drew, and I say bring it on!

So I dig up something from the archive, from 2002 specifically, and feed it into the blog on a day I'm feeling unoriginal. And it turns out to be wrong. And Sean Heather, being no shrinking violet and something of a friend of mine besides, lets me know it.

And the true story is so much more amusing than the version I'd posted that I am practically drooling to type it out, and a damn good thing he can't tell over the phone or he'd be cagier. The saliva nearly shorted the damn thing out, I tell ya.

So here is the actual story of the real painting(s) of the Irish Heather, another painting entirely, and done by another Fireman entirely. Who knew the Lower Mainland would hold two paintbrush-wielding firefighters of brusque, macho persuasions? But so it does. And this story involves, as the other does not, allegations of IRA terrorism, the L.Ron-esque founding of religions, cop-punching, incendiary rivalry, con artistry, wild chases through Gastown, death threats, art, and flame-clad gimp-ism.

I just wish I could somehow work "mango porn" into this: I'd absolutely own Google!

[this is what's known as a teaser. I'm off typing the rest, assuming you all to be hanging by the monitors, waiting for an update. Ain't I the egotistical one. Besides, I don't want Sean to cut off my credit, thinking I'm not correcting the record ;) *waves*]

Update: We're gonna hafta wait till I come down off the cold meds, sometime tomorrow, for the update. Currently don't trust myself to do more than post amusing video and deliberately misquote Tories, a talent which never deserts me.
