The Memory Festival is a free-floating series of public events focussed on public and private memory, and the questions that surround acts of memory and forgetting.

 

Vancouver book designer and writer Barbara Hodgson is appearing with slides from her new book Trading in Memories, http://www.tradinginmemories.com

 

Trading in Memories is Barbara Hodgson’s collage of souvenirs and travel stories from around the world about lost and found art picked up off the street, treasures discovered at flea markets and documents uncovered from between the pages of other finds.

12 MIDNITE’S LOUD LOWBROW CLOSING PARTY

12 MIDNITE, generally acknowledged as the proud pappy of Canada’s
Lowbrow scene ends his six week run at the CHAPEL this Saturday…. and
he’s bringing some pals along for the ride.
LOUD LOWBROW is a showcase of midnite’s artwork, music and custom cars,
presented in the confines of a converted art deco funeral chapel
through the good graces of Chapelarts owner Nathan Wiens and curator
Jennifer Abrams.

The opening was a spectacle that saw the street packed with of wicked
hotrods, while inside the CHAPEL’S posh interior the black leather
rubbed against Armani as art hungry fans had the red dots flying for
the work of MIDNITE and fellow pop-punk pioneer I, Braineater.

This time, Abrams has 12 MIDNITE teaming up with ROBERT CHAPLIN, who
has been referred to as one of Canada’s hidden artistic treasures.

CHAPLIN AT THE CHAPEL will have Chaplin taking over the ground floor
with is prodigious output including ink drawings, paintings, meticulous
metal, stone and glass sculptures, children’s books and if we’re lucky,
a copy of his world’s smallest published book

Beneath his mild mannered exterior lies the soul of an evil genius that
has captured the hearts of clever collectors far and wide.

Speaking of clever collectors, this will be Vancouver’s last chance of
the year to scoop up 12 Midnite art as it’s being packed-up to travel
to distant realms…Consider yourself warned.

As an added bonus, MELISSA JAMES will be screening “SHAKE, RATTLE AND
ROLL” her short documentary on the Vancouver Rockabilly scene which was
shot in part at THE CHAPEL during the LOUD LOWBROW opening.

Music for the evening will be provided by THE STINGING HORNETS
featuring a collection of long-time rockabilly legends including HOWARD
RIX and JIMMY ROY in all their sweat-and-bourbon-soaked greaseball
glory.

And if that weren’t enough, the 10th marks Chapelarts owner NATHAN
WIENS’ annual 29th birthday party! Who knows, there might even be
cake….

adventures in writing for children

After twenty years writing for adults, Lois Peterson has written four kids novels in the past six months, and just can’t seem to stop. In her informal presentation Down the Rabbit Hole – adventures in writing for children she will share what has changed since she was a bookaholic kid, what remains the same, and how to tell the difference.

Lois (www.lpwordsolutions.com) is also a creative writing instructor and author of 101 – and More – Writing Exercises to Get You Stared & Keep You Going. While her novel Tansy Here and Now is currently under serious consideration at a wonderful kids’ publishing house, she has reverted to another childhood habit – biting her nails.

Bio: Lois Peterson was brought up in the now-beleagued cities of Basra and Kirkuk (Iraq), ran away from boarding school in her housecoat, and over the years was caught telling numerous lies. So she turned to writing. She publishes articles, essays, and short stories, and in 2007 hopes to finish one novel Who Do You Wish was With Us, and begin another, Just Go. She teaches creative writing to anyone who wants to learn, operates a writing and editing business, and has worked for many, many years for a major public library.

Dress writerly. Berets and/or Team Dorothy Parker tees optional.

Notice!

So this one time I was down at the Heather, and, in fact, I’ve been there more than just the one time; I’m there all the damn time, in fact, I was there today, only this one time? That was not this time. It was a completely different time. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

What? I only had two drinks!

So this time, I was down at the Heather and so were quite a number of other people, it being, I think, a Friday, and don’t we all need a good, stiff drink of a Friday? Indeed we do, and particularly myself. And one of these other people, a loquacious and somewhat recovering-fratboy-type fellow of a certain girth and a certain volume, was telling another, a much more discreet and forgettable straight man type in a hat, that he loved living on the Downtown EastSide, and why? Why, because he could take pictures of the junkies tweaking in the alley and post them to his blog.

And, as he said this, I wrote it down.

Cuz that’s how I roll, yo.

And, as I wrote it down, the manageress discreetly elbowed said frat-alum and pointed in my direction for, lo, she knows my evil, gossip-recording shenanigans from way back, and is generally the sharpest knife in the drawer to boot.

And fratboy, looking straight at me, said, “OH! Well I guess I better be careful! Big Brother is watching!”

And I said, still writing and without looking up, “Yes, but at least he’s not taking pictures and uploading them to his blog.”

Which got, it must be said, a fair round of applause, if no free drinks.

· podcasting, video, audio, and text posts
· basic copyright law and accepted practices

· joining the blogosphere at large
· solving basic technical problems, where to find help
· what to say when you have nothing to say/what to say when you have far too much to say.
